DIRECTIONS HEADING NORTH ON MAINE TURNPIKE FROM SOUTH OF MAINE
Once on the Maine Turnpike take Exit 4 (Biddeford exit). (note: you are not on the Maine Turnpike immediately after crossing the Maine/New Hampshire bridge. There is an exit 4 just prior to getting on the Maine Turnpike. If you take this one in error it is worth turning around and going back to get onto the Maine Turnpike).
Recommended alternate route during current road construction while this is posted on web site:
[change a portion of the instructions shown below starting from tollbooth to as follows: when exiting the Maine Turnpike at Exit 4…go straight through the traffic light to the next traffic light (which is on Rt.1). Turn left and go to your next traffic light (5 points intersection). Do not take a hard right at this light but do bear right at the light. This will put you on Alfred Road. Go to next traffic light (7-11 on left corner) and turn right and you will now be on the Pool Road (also is Rt. 9) and continue with existing directions starting from the Pool Road shown below.]
After going through the Exit 4 toll booth take first left. This is the Alfred Road.
(For those of you who are coming to Maine to rent a vacation home you may want to consider the convenience of the new Shaw's Supermarket that is on your left as you get onto the Alfred Road.)
Once onto Alfred Road continue roughly for one mile to your fourth red light. You are now at "5 Points Intersection".
A Mobil gas station is on your right and a D'Angelo's Sandwich shop is on your left.
Don't bear left (on Rt. 1) but go straight through the light to continue on Alfred Street. A Burger King will be on your right as you proceed.
Continue for roughly one mile to your next red light.
A 7-11 convenience store (and gas) will be on your left at this light.
Turn right (Pool St.) at this light and go up the hill, go two blocks to your next red light. Go straight through the light; you are now on Pool Road (Route 9) which leads to the ocean. Continue for roughly 3.5 miles until you see Sea Star market (Texaco gas) on your right..
Turn left at this store onto Hills Beach Road. You will also see a sign that says University of New England (UNE).
You will immediately begin to see the UNE campus buildings.
Take your next left at the fork in the road to stay on Hills Beach Road; if you go straight you will land back up on Route 9.
Proceed roughly an eigth of a mile and you will come to two very tight curves in the road (and best to drive slowly around them as the road there is very narrow and there are many joggers and bicyclists in the area), then the road will straighten out.
Go another roughly eigth of a mile to the only restaurant at Hills Beach called Bufflehead's Restaurant (highly recommended) on the right side of the road.
Continue for seven more houses and you will see the vacation house (white stucco house on the left-ocean side) at 125 Hills Beach Road.
Voila! You have arrived! Welcome to Maine! It's time! You deserve living in Maine!
IF YOU ARE TRAVELING NORTH TO VACATION HOUSE FROM KENNEBUNKPORT, MAINE
From Dock Square, Kennebunkport head north on Route 9.
Continue for several miles and you will enter a small village called Cape Porpoise (still in Kennebunkport).
Stay on Route 9 by turning left at the local hardware store in the village.
Continue north on Route 9 for approximately 8 miles then turn right onto Hills Beach Road across the street from Sea Star market (food sundries and Texaco gas).
Once onto Hills Beach Road continue with same directions as listed above.
IF YOU ARE TRAVELING FROM NORTH OF BIDDEFORD AND ARE HEADING SOUTH TO VACATION HOUSE
Once on the Maine Turnpike (I-95) heading south take the Saco Exit (Exit 5).
After going through the toll booth take your second exit (Exit 2a) (about one mile from the toll booth). This exit places you onto Rt.1 South.
Turn right onto Rt. 1 to head south. If you are renting a house on vacation please note the convenient Shop-N-Save Supermarket on your right just as you come onto Rt. 1.
You will drive by many fast food restaurants, then at your third red light you will see Thornton Academy on your right.
At the next red light Rt. 1 will bear to the right (one block south of Thornton Academy) but you will continue straight through this light and go through the business district of Saco.
You will cross over one set of railroad tracks and then down a hill, cross a bridge over the Saco River and then take your second left (Hill Street).
Go up Hill Street through a blinking yellow light to a red light (Rt. 9).
Turn left at the red light and continue for about 3.5 miles to Sea Star market (food sundries and Texaco gas). Turn left across from this market onto Hills Beach Road and from this point continue following the directions to 125 Hills Beach Road as noted in the first set of directions above.
